Triangle of Sadness

My favourite social barometer is the movies and what they tell us about the way we live. There’s a current backlash against wealth, privilege and indulgence that isn’t always easy to watch.
By far the cleverest and more observant is TRIANGLE OF SADNESS which personifies the sins of baby boomer success and buries it in vomit. There’s one scene on a beach that bothers me as contradictory. I’ll nominate it later because it’s a plot spoiler in an excellent film. Less clever and downright nasty is THE MENU with an excellent cast playing obnoxious and mad characters whose indulgence is mutually destructive. The problem with satires like this is there’s no-one to cheer. They’re all so hopelessly lost to indulgence (mostly food) but to a world of extreme pampering in the name of wealth. The protagonist does’nt need to be heroic but a little humanity might provide relief. The latter is vicious and obviously didn’t register with audiences since it’s been sold to Disney and available on subscription. TRIANGLE is a must-see but don’t go to dinner before the movie, and especially not a high-priced exclusive place.
